H.E. Mr. Akaalewold Habtwold established a legacy that will last for millennia. He made a paramount contribution to Ethiopian conservation by championing the creation of the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Organization (EWCO), which evolved to EWCA, when the country had little foundation in wildlife science. He is famously remembered for his humble appeal to the UNESCO General Assembly in 1963, which led to the establishment of Ethiopia’s national parks. As we approach the EWCA’s 60th anniversary in 2026, it is our hope that his foundational role will be rightfully honored.
