Experts have raised concerns that existing laws and regulations in Ethiopia are obstructing the country’s pursuit of economic growth. Among the regulations cited are those governing electric motorcycle riders and owners. In a bold move, the Ethiopian government has become the first country to ban the import of gas-powered vehicles, aiming to promote electric alternatives.Despite this initiative, investors interested in entering the electric vehicle sector face significant challenges due to recent regulatory changes. Dodai Manufacturing Plc, which recently entered the Ethiopian market, has reported selling over 600 electric motorcycles since their launch. However, Yuma Sasaki, Founder and CEO of Dodai, expressed frustration over the regulatory landscape. “We are still discussing amendments to the regulations concerning motorcycle and electric motorcycle transport services in Addis Ababa,” Sasaki stated. He highlighted the complexities involved in obtaining necessary permits, including number plates for electric motorbikes, which are still a new concept in the city.Sasaki emphasized the importance of understanding the benefits of electric motorcycles for both delivery drivers and commuters. “We are aligning with Ethiopian Investment Holdings and the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau to facilitate these processes,” he said, expressing optimism about eventually enabling broader access to driver’s licenses and number plates.The CEO also pointed out that while regulations aimed at expanding the electric vehicle market exist, they are not being effectively enforced. “We share a common 

understanding of the benefits of EV solutions with various government entities, but aligning on these issues can be challenging due to their novelty,” he noted.In response to these challenges, Dodai Manufacturing has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ethiopian Investment Holdings to support the production of electric motorcycles and battery swapping stations in Ethiopia. The company plans to establish 100 battery swapping stations where users can exchange depleted batteries for charged ones.Dodai aims to produce 5,000 electric motorcycles and set up 100 battery swapping stations within the next year. The construction sites for these stations will be provided by Ethiopian Investment Holdings, with further details on their partnership expected to be announced soon.With an investment of $7 million in a factory located in Addis Ababa, Dodai is committed to contributing to Ethiopia’s transition toward sustainable transportation solutions. As discussions continue regarding regulatory reforms, both Dodai and government officials recognize the need for collaboration to foster a thriving electric vehicle market in Ethiopia.

The shaking was felt the whole Addis Ababa , the capital of Ethiopia with people living in apartments and condos were forced to leave their homes for hours.

The epicenter was about 23 km (14 miles) northeast of Awash. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and shaking was probably felt throughout central Ethiopia.

There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely.

It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage.

Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake’s epicenter.

NAIROBI, Oct 1 (Reuters) – Here is a timeline of key events as Ethiopia ramps up efforts to make progress on its long-delayed debt restructuring:

* November 2020: War breaks out in the northern region of Tigray between forces loyal to the regional government and the federal military, further straining government finances hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

* Disruptions related to the war and COVID lead to the collapse of a $2.9 billion IMF programme agreed in December 2019. Fund staff carry out the programme’s first review in mid-2020, but the board never finalises it and it is abandoned by both sides.

* January 2021: The government says it will seek to restructure its sovereign debt under a new G20 initiative to offer relief to developing economies known as the Common Framework. It becomes the second nation, after Chad, to announce it will pursue the initiative. Zambia and Ghana later follow.

* June 2022: Talks with the IMF resume.

ባለፈው ሳምንት አገዛዙ ፋኖን ከሕዝብ ጋር ለማጋጨት እየሰራ እንደሆነ በዝርዝር ፅፌያለሁ። አንደኛው የእገታ ጉዳይ ነው። በእገታው አገዛዙ ከፍተኛ እጅ አለበት። ነገር ግን የፋኖ አመራርም ጉዳዩን ትኩረት አልሰጠውም። እንዲያውም አገዛዙ ፋኖን ከማህበረሰቡ ጋር አጋጭቶ ትግሉን ለማኮላሸት የሚያደርገውን ጥረት የፋኖ አመራርም ሆነ አባላት በዝምታም ሆነ በተዘዋዋሪም ሆነ በቀጥታ ተሳትፎ ሳያውቁት እያገዙት ነው።

በሁሉም የአማራ ክፍል እየተባባሰ የመጣው በጎንደር እየከፋ የመጣው እገታ ጉዳይ ላይ ፋኖ የአቅሙን መፍትሔ መስጠት፣ አቋሙን ማሳወቅ፣ አሊያም ከህዝብ ጋር ሆኖ ታግሎ ከፍተኛ የፖለቲካ ድል ማግኘት ሲችል እየታማበት ነው። አደገኛ ነው!

የጎንደሩን ሁኔታ አብነት እጠቅሳለሁ።

1) የፋኖ የቅርብ ዘመድና ወዳጆች ታግተው በነፃ ተለቅቀዋል። ይህ ጎንደር ውስጥ በስም ተጠቅሶ “የፋኖ እንትና እህት፣ የፋኖ እንትና ጎረቤት” ተብሎ እየተወራበት ያለው ጉዳይ ነው። ታጋቾች የተፈቱት የፋኖ አመራሮች በቀጥታ ደውለው ነው። ይህ ማለት የፋኖ አመራሮች ለራሳቸው ዘመድ ወዳጆች ያደረጉትን ለሌላው ሕዝብም ማድረግ ይችላሉ። የፋኖ አመራሮች አስፈራርተውም ቢሆን ያስለቀቁ፣ አፋኖችን ያውቃሉ ማለት ነው። የአገዛዙን ዋና ኃይሎች አሳድደው አዲስ አበባ ያስገቡ የፋኖ አመራሮች ከጫካ ወደ ከተማ እየመጣ ንፁሃንን የሚያግት ወንበዴ ልክ ማስገባት ሊያቅታቸው አይችልም። ትኩረት ስላልሰጡት ነው። ከህዝብ ጋር የበለጠ የሚያጋምድ የፖለቲካ ድል እንደሚያስገኝ ስላልገባቸው፣ ዋና አላማ ከሚሉት የሚያናጥብ ስለመሰላቸው ይሆናል። ግን ስህተት ነው። ህዝብህን ሳትይዝ ትግል የለም። ከወንበዴ ጋር ጎን ለጎን እየተላለፉ ድል አይመጣም። አሁን ጭራሽ ትግሉ እየታማበት ነው።

2) የፋኖ አባላትም ሆኖ ደጋፊዎች በተለያዩ ሚዲያዎች እየቀረቡ ለአገዛዙ ይሰራሉ የሚሏቸውን አካላት በፎቶና በስም ጭምር ያጋለጡበት ጊዜ አለ። በርካታ ሰው ከመጥቀሳቸው የተነሳ የንፁሃን ስም ጭምር አብሮ የሚነሳበት አጋጣሚም ታይቷል። በቅርብ ደግሞ እርስ በእርስ ስም መጠፋፋቱ ጦፏል። የፋኖ አመራሮችን ስም እያነሱ በሚዲያ መተቻቸትና መወጋገዝ እየተለመደ ነው። ለአገዛዙ እየሰሩ ነው በሚል የሚጠቀሱትን ጨምር የጋራ አላማ ያላቸው የፋኖ አመራሮችን ስም ለማንሳት ያልከበዳቸው የፋኖ አመራርና አባላት ደጀናቸው የሆነውን ህዝብ የሚያግቱና የሚገድሉትን ከፍ ሲል አገዛዙ ፋኖን ከህዝብ ጋር ለማጋጨት እየተጠቀመባቸው ያሉትን ወንበዴዎች ስም ዘርዝሮ ለህዝብ ማሳወቅ፣ ከህዝብ ጋር እንደሚታገሏቸው መግለፅ ያልደፈሩበት ምክንያት አሳማኝ አይደለም። ምክንያቱም የከተማው ህዝብ “እንትና የሚባል ፋኖ ዘመዱን በነፃ አስለቅቋል” እያለ እየተናገረ ነው። በነፃ የተለቀቁ የፋኖ ቤተሰቦች ስለመኖራቸው የተረጋገጡ መረጃዎችም አሉ።

3) አማራ ከሌሎች ክልሎች ሲሳደድ “የሚደርስለት ስለሌለ” አልን። አሁን ፋኖ በቅርብ ያለበት ህዝብ የሚወደውን ከተማ ለቅቆ እየተሰደደ ነው። ከአማራ ክልል በቅርብ ጊዜያት የሚደረጉ በረራዎች አብዛኛውና ለአካባቢው ስራ የሚፈጥረው አካል ጓዙን ጠቅልሎ የሚሰደድባቸው ሆነዋል። ይህ ስደት ታግቶ ከመዘረፍ፣ ከሞት ለመዳን የሚደረግ ነው። ይህን ለማስቆም የሚችለው አገዛዙ አይደለም። አገዛዙማ ማስመረር ነው አላማው። ደስታው ነው። ፋኖ ግን የአገዛዙን ሰራዊት እየተፋለመ አራት አምስት ሆነው ንፁሃንን የሚያግቱትን በየቦታው ልክ አስገብቶ የሚሰደዱትን “አለሁላችሁ” ማለትና የራሱ ቋሚ ደጋፊዎች ማድረግ ይችል ነበር። የአገዛዙን አካሄድ ከህዝብ ጋር ሆኖ ገትቶ የተቆጣጠረውን አካባቢ ሰላም መፍጠር እንደሚችል ቢያሳይ ዓለም አቀፍ ተቀባይነቱም በናረ ነበር። ዋና ትኩረት አልሆነም።

4) ከግለሰቦች አልፎ የባለሀብት መኪኖች እየተያዙ በሚሊዮን ብር እየተከፈለባቸው ነው። ከፍተኛ የፋኖ አመራር ልቀቁ ብሎ አዞ ከስር ያሉት “የእኛ ወታደር ምን ሊበላ ነው?” ብለው አንድ ሚሊዮን ያስከፈሉት ባለሀብት አካባቢውን ለቅቆ ሄዷል። ለሽምግልና የሄዱ አባቶች ተይዘው የቡድን መሳሪያ ካልገዛችሁ አትለቀቁም ተብለዋል። እገታ በአይነት ተከፍሏል። ይህ ከመርህ ያፈነገጠ አካሄድ ከፋኖ ለቅቀው የሄዱ፣ አገዛዙ አሁን የሚጠቀምባቸው አግቶ ብር መቀበልን እንደ ስራ እንዲቆጥሩት አድርጓል።

5) በፋኖ ስም ሚዲያ ላይ እየተዋወቁ እገታ የሚፈፅሙ ፋኖ ፋኖዎች እንዳልሆኑ የሚያውቃቸው አካላት አሉ። ከፋኖ ወጥተው በዚህ ወንጀል የተሰማሩ አሉ። እገታ ሲፈፅሙ ከርመው ፋኖን የሚቀላቀሉ አሉ። ስለእነዚህ አካላት ፋኖ በይፋና የሚጠቅመውን አላደረገም። አንዳንድ አካባቢዎች ፋኖ በወንበዴዎች ላይ እርምጃ ወስዷል። ነገር ግን እንደ አላማ አልወሰደውም። ከህዝብ ጋር አልሰራበትም። የአቅሙንና የሚጠቅመውን ያህል አልሄደበትም።

6) ፋኖ የሚሊሻን ብቻ ሳይሆን የቴሌና መብራት ኃይል ዘበኛን መሳሪያ አስወርዷል። ድሮ እናቶች እሪ ሲሉ ባሉበት ጥይት ተኩሰው ወንበዴን የሚያደናግጡ ዘበኞች ጭምር አሁን መሳሪያ አልባ ናቸው። ችግሩ ይህ አይደለም። ፋኖ የራሱን ፀጥታ አላስቀመጠው። ጦርነት ባለበት ሁሉ መዞር እንጅ የራስን ፀጥታ አዋቅሮ አካባቢን ማረጋጋት የሚባል አልተሰራም። የፀጥታ መዋቅር ይፈርሳል የራስ ፀጥታ መዋቅር አይዘረጋም የቻለ የሚዘርፍበት ሁኔታ ይፈጠራል። አሁን የተረፈው የአገዛዙ ፀጥታ የሚጠብቀው ባለስልጣንን ነው። ህዝብ ጠባቂ የለውም። ጠባቂ መሆን ያለበት ፋኖ ነው። አሊያም ሚሊሻውን ከራሱ ጋር በሚሄድ መንገድ አደራጅቶ መቀጠል ነበረበት።

አሁን አስቸኳይ መፍትሄ ያስፈልጋል።

1) እገታ በአገዛዙ ዋና ሴራ፣ በፋኖ የአካሄድና የትኩረት ችግር የመጣ መሆኑን አምኖ ተቀብሎ በአስቸኳይ መገምገም። በግምገማ ሌሎች ምክንያቶችም ሊገኙ ይችላሉ። ማካተት።

2) ከህዝብ ጋር ላለመጋጨት፣ ውስጥ ውስጡን እየተወራ ያለውን መረጃ በመያዝ በአስቸኳይ ማጥራት።

3) በዚህ መሰረት እገታ፣ ግድያና ዘረፋ በህዝባችንና በትግሉ ላይ የተደቀነ ፈተና መሆኑን አምኖ ህዝብን አስተባብሮ መታገል።

4) እገታ የሚፈፅሙ አካላት በማጋለጥ፣ ፋኖ ጋር ግንኙነት ያላቸውን ተገቢውን የዲስፕሊን እርምጃ በመውሰድ፣ በፋኖ ስም እየተንቀሳቀሱ የሚያግቱትን የእሱ አካል እንዳልሆኑ በማሳየት እንደሚታገላቸው በተግባር ማሳየት።

5) በጉዳዩ ላይ ህዝብን አወያይቶ፣ የጋራ አቋሞ ይዞ ይፋ ማድረግና እነዚህ አጋቾች ላይ ግልፅ ወታደራዊ ዘመቻ መጀመር።

እንዲህ ካልሆነ ጉዳዩ እየተለባበሰ፣ አገዛዙ እየተጠቀመበት፣ ህዝብ ውስጥ ውስጡን እያወራው ትግሉን ይገድለዋል። ከአሁኑ መፍትሔ ከተሰጠው ግን አገዛዙ ለህዝብ ማድረግ የማይችለውን አድርጎ ፋኖ ትግሉንም ሕዝብንም ያድንበታል። የነገ ቋሚ ደጋፊዎቹን ያፈራበታል። ፖለቲካ ያተርፍበታል። የአማራን ትክክለኛ አላማ የሚቦረቡረውን የጎንዮሽ የወንጀል ቡድን ያጠፋበታል። ፋኖ ከተማ ገብቶ ድንቅ ጀብዱ እንደፈፀመ በየቀኑ እየተወራ የራሱ አካባቢ ጫካ ላይ ማንም ወንበዴ ሲፈነጭ ዝም ካለ አረም ሆኖ ትግሉን ይበላዋል።

ህዝብ ማለት ዝም ብሎ ጅምላ አይደለም። ከቤታ ታንቃ ጫካ ተወስዳ ቤተሰቦቿ የተጠየቁትን መክፈል ባለመቻላቸው የምትገደል ህፃን፣ የሚሰቃይ ሽማግሌ፣ መውጫ መግቢያ ያጣው ወጣት ነው ሕዝብ ማለት። ህዝብ ማለት ተሳቅቆ እየተሳደደ የሚገኘው ነው። ህዝብ ማለት እያንዳንዱ በእገታ የሚሰቃየው፣ በልመና ተሰብስቦለት የሚከፍለው ነው። ወለጋና መተከል፣ ራያና ወልቃይት ላይ ሲፈፀም የኖረ ጭካኔ አሁን ቦ አማራ ክልል ውስጥ ቦርቆ ባደገበት የከተማ ዳር ሲፈፀም የዚህን ህልውና ከማስጠበቅ፣ ይህን ከትግል የሚያጣላ እንቅፋት ከመንቀል የሚቀድም ትግል የለም!

In what appears to be an event solely motivated by political gains amid worsening political bankruptcy , Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday traveled to Nekemete, Oromia region of Ethiopia, where he made a controversial speech (many fear it could trigger another round of ethnic cleansing)  to a crowd packed in the town’s stadium. He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, and Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament, Temesgen Chafo – among other members of Abiy Ahmed government officials. 

Wollega is one of the areas in the Oromia region of Ethiopia where the militant ethnic Oromo Nationalist that calls itself  Oromo Liberation Army operates extensively.  From the video footage government media outlets aired, it is noticeable that there was a very tight security arrangement for the event. Security detail for PM Abiy was even tighter.

For many, including those in Oromo politics,  the political rally in support of Abiy Ahmed in Nekemte was staged. Political cadres and members of the ruling party took part in it. The party claims to have more than 14 million members. 

But that is not the problem for many. The problem, based on ongoing social media conversations and news reports by Ethiopian outlets, is that Abiy Ahmed made a narrative that could potentially perpetuate ethnic violence in the country. He made the speech in Oromigna language. It is unclear if the senior members of his government who do not understand the language got a translation of his speech. 

A report by al-ain quoted him as saying “Oromo people were denied its identity over one century, were made to not use its language, were denied ownership of the country and considered as a second class citizen. Now the ‘Oromo is liberated’ with a sacrifice that was paid. The people need to understand this.”  It is common for Shimeles Abdissa, president of the Oromia region, to make speeches like that in public in the Oromo language. Abiy Ahmed has been painting himself as one a politician free from ethnic parochialism. His remarks at Nekemte Stadium rather seem to suggest that he subscribes to radical narratives that Shimeles Abdissa has been saying in public.  

Abiy Ahmed went further, based on al-ain report, to paint an image of an enemy against which ethnic Oromo must unite. “Let us end being deceived by the enemy and being divided on the enemy’s agenda,” he is quoted as saying.   He also called for an end for fighting one another – apparently within ethnic Oromo.   Ethnic Oromo nationalists have been employing the code word “neftegna’” against ethnic Amhara. Since Abiy Ahmed took over power in 2018, tens of thousands of ethnic Amhara civilians have been massacred in the Oromia region – among other areas. 

Taye Dendea, who used to be a state Minister for  Peace and who is currently in prison, described Abiy Ahmed – as “a person who does not honor what he said and as a ruthless individual who plays with the blood of innocent people.”  Taye’s remark – which is believed to be the reason for his arrest – seems to capture what Abiy Ahmed did in Nekemte Stadium. 

Abiy Ahmed’s ruling party has been claiming that it undertook a series of political assessments to figure out the underlying causes of the country’s political crisis and political polarization. One of the findings was, it was said a few years ago, a polarizing political narrative and lack of shared narrative.

The radical ethnic Oromo Nationalist quarter was known to be – at least outside of ethnic Oromo politics – the major problem in bringing an end to radical narratives that make other ethnic groups – primarily ethnic Amhara – vulnerable to violent attacks and massacres in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. What Abiy Ahmed said during his speech on Wednesday was rather one that aggravates the problem.  

Abiy Ahmed also made calls for “people” to support his government and promised to bring about development to Wollega – the part of Oromia region of Ethiopia which he said is lagging behind in development due to the conflict in the region.

Ethiopia’s Unchecked Abuses: The Plight of the Amhara People

The recent mass arrests of Amhara individuals in Addis Ababa and various parts of Ethiopia  based on their ethnic background have raised serious concerns about the state of human  rights and accountability in the country. Being Amhara has become a crime in itself, with  individuals being detained without arrest warrants, subjected to illegal searches of their  electronic devices, and coerced by the police to either pay bribes or face arrest. 

The Ethiopian government’s security forces have been accused of widespread abuses  against Amhara individuals, including shootings, abuse, and killings, with no one held  accountable for these actions. The government seems to operate with impunity when it  comes to the lives of Amhara people, treating them as criminals before they even have a  chance to stand trial. 

Furthermore, the Ethiopian government has been implicated in mass killings in various  regions across the country, including Oromia, Tigray, Gambella, Benishangul, Afar, Somali,  and the former SNNP regions. Despite these allegations, the government has attempted to  distance itself from responsibility and portray itself as innocent, undermining efforts for  reconciliation and transitional justice. 

On April 24, 2024, a statement from the National Security Council emphasized that while a  peaceful political transition is important, it is just one step towards achieving broader goals.  The statement highlighted that Ethiopia’s challenges cannot be fully addressed by simply  tweaking the current approach and underscored the need to address historical divisions. Three proposed solutions were outlined: addressing current political issues through national  dialogue, rectifying recent political challenges through transitional justice, and  implementing reforms aimed at protecting and preserving the leading party’s prosperity. 

The government’s approach to reconciliation appears to be self-serving, with a focus on  appointing loyalists to key positions and crafting a narrative that absolves it of any  wrongdoing. While the government claims to be working towards peace and security, its  actions tell a different story, with ongoing human rights abuses, extrajudicial killings, and  ethnic-based arrests continuing unabated.

It is crucial for the international community to pay attention to the plight of the Amhara  people in Ethiopia before the situation escalates further. Preventing further atrocities in the  country is paramount to avoiding a humanitarian crisis with regional implications. The time  to act is now to prevent history from repeating itself and ensure accountability for all those  responsible for human rights violations in Ethiopia. 

In conclusion, the situation in Ethiopia, particularly concerning the treatment of Amhara  individuals and the broader human rights abuses across various regions, is deeply troubling.  The government’s actions, characterized by ethnic-based arrests, extrajudicial killings, and a  lack of accountability, paint a grim picture of the state of human rights and justice in the  country. The proposed solutions outlined by the National Security Council are a step in the  right direction, emphasizing the need for national dialogue, transitional justice, and reforms  to address historical divisions. However, the government’s self-serving approach to  reconciliation and continued human rights violations underscore the urgency for  international attention and action. Preventing further atrocities and ensuring accountability  for those responsible are crucial to averting a humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia. It is imperative  for the international community to intervene now to prevent a worsening of the situation  and uphold the principles of human rights and justice for all Ethiopians.

በዚህም መሰረት አብዛኛው የአዲስ አበባ ክፍል እና የተቀሩት የሀገሪቱ ክፍሎች መልሰው ኃይል ማግኘት ችለዋል።

የተቀሩትን አካባቢዎች መልሶ ለማገናኘት ጥረቱ ቀጥሏል።

As the sun rises over Ethiopia, casting a radiant morning glow over its vibrant landscapes, the reality on the ground presents a jarring contrast to the picturesque scenes commonly associated with this East African nation. A glimpse beyond the veneer of tranquility reveals a populace besieged by the specter of war, famine, and the destabilizing forces of climate change. Yet, the nation’s government continues to project an image of peace and prosperity, weaving a narrative that stands starkly at odds with the lived experiences of its citizenry.

The Ethiopian government, under the auspices of the Prosperity Party, has been mired in a flurry of controversy. Amidst this backdrop of struggle, it has been accused of an act most reprehensible: the selling of food aid that was intended for the country’s most vulnerable. Donations, offered as a lifeline to Ethiopians grappling with food insecurity, are alleged to have been funneled into the open market, creating a chasm between the purported intentions of the administration and the bitter realities facing its people.

The implications of this alleged action are far-reaching. The beneficiaries of this food aid, the majority of whom are families wracked by poverty, stand to be the most affected. Their dependence on these resources, now in jeopardy, could further exacerbate an already dire humanitarian crisis. Yet, despite the gravity of these accusations, the Ethiopian government continues to project an image of normalcy, conveniently sidestepping the pressing questions about accountability and ethics.

The nation’s economy, too, bears the brunt of this paradoxical situation. As inflation soars and food becomes an unaffordable luxury for many residents of the capital city, Addis Ababa, the government appears to be woefully out of touch. New taxes have been imposed, prices on essential services have surged, and the common man finds himself grappling with an escalating cost of living.

Meanwhile, the administration’s expenditure paints a contrasting picture. Funds continue to flow into official meetings, foreign visits, and elaborate celebrations, fueling resentment among a population fighting for survival. The stark dichotomy between the lived realities of the masses and the opulence showcased by the government creates an unsettling dissonance that echoes across the nation.

The Ethiopian media landscape, heavily influenced by the government and a select few private entities, aids in maintaining this illusion of well-being. Rather than focusing on the widespread hardship, these media outlets highlight luxury and cater to the interests of the affluent and the political elite. This curated narrative of prosperity not only obscures the realities on the ground but also widens the gap between the government and the governed.

In this skewed representation of Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is often portrayed as a beacon of hope. His speeches are brimming with optimistic projections, insinuating that the Prosperity Party heralds the dawn of a new era. However, the stark incongruence between his claims and the realities on the ground raises questions about the government’s commitment to its people.

While Ethiopia finds itself at the crossroads of change, it becomes increasingly apparent that the government’s narrative of prosperity is far removed from the challenges faced by its citizenry. The façade of stability risks undermining the urgency needed to address the ongoing crises. Civic organizations also have a pivotal role to play in this context. These entities, positioned at the intersection of society and politics, can work to bring about positive change in numerous ways. Safaricom Ethiopia’s CEO to leave next month

Safaricom Ethiopia’s CEO Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC (STEP) announced that Anwar Soussa Chid, the telecom’s Chief Executive Officer, will be leaving the company effective July 31, 2023 after completing his two-year secondment.

Anwar joined Safaricom Ethiopia in August 2021 to lead the company’s establishment, set up business operations, and rollout the telecom network. As the first CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, Anwar has overseen “several achievements” in the dynamic Ethiopian market, including onboarding the initial team members and launching commercial operations.

Under Anwar’s leadership, Safaricom Ethiopia has acquired over 4 million customers with its network now covering more than 25 percent of the population across major cities and towns. The telecom also secured a mobile financial services license under Anwar, paving the way for the launch of M-PESA mobile money services.

In a message to staff, Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa expressed gratitude to Anwar for his leadership and contributions in establishing Safaricom Ethiopia. “Throughout his tenure, Anwar has demonstrated unwavering passion and commitment, which have played a crucial role in our achievements to date,” Ndegwa said.

While thanking Anwar for his work, Ndegwa said his successor will be announced in due course.
