Misusing International Aid to Wage War on Its Own People Account

The Abiy government in Ethiopia has been under scrutiny for its targeted drone attacks on civilians in the Amhara and Oromia regions, resulting in the deaths of children and women. Despite these allegations, the government is seeking loans from international organizations such as the IMF and World Bank. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of children and women, sparking outrage and condemnation from human rights groups worldwide.

Abiy’s government’s reliance on foreign loans to fund its military campaigns is a cause for concern, as the money is being used to wage war against its own people rather than for development or humanitarian purposes. According to sources, the funds obtained from these loans are reportedly being used to wage war against the Ethiopian people, including the purchase of Iranian, Chinese and Turkish-made drones for civilian killings in the Amhara and Oromia regions. The purchase of drones has only escalated the violence in the country like Amhara, Tigray and Oromia regions, where civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict. This strategy is seen as an attempt to avoid peaceful negotiations, which the government perceives as a threat to its power.

The money acquired from these loans were meant for the betterment of the country, but the Abiy government has also been used to strengthen the government’s control, silence opposition through financial incentives, and fund luxurious projects such as parks that cater to the ego of the ruling party rather than addressing public needs. The loans have also been used to suppress the Amhara people’s quest for survival and freedom, further exacerbating the already dire situation in the country.

It is clear that Abiy’s government is misusing international aid to further its oppressive agenda, leading to more suffering and instability in Ethiopia. In particular, the Abiy government has utilized these loans to suppress the Amhara people’s aspirations for self-determination and freedom, as well as to quell the quest for democracy within Ethiopia. Unless there is international intervention to hold the government accountable for its actions, the cycle of violence and repression is likely to continue, with devastating consequences for the Ethiopian people. If further loans are granted without the Abiy government demonstrating transparency and accountability, there is a high likelihood that the funds will be used to perpetuate oppressive and violent practices against its own people. This would only exacerbate the suffering and human rights abuses already taking place. Therefore, it is crucial for international lenders to demand transparency and accountability from the Ethiopian government before providing any further financial assistance.
