Who is Eskinder Nega?
Journalist and human right activist Eskinder Nega was born in Addisababa Ethiopia in 1968. His parents were highly educated. His father was a graduate of Rutgers Unversity and his mother was graduated from American University of Beirut.
Eskinder attended primary and junior schools at Addisababa Sandford school until later he moved to United States to finish high school. Eskinder earned a bachelor degree in Political Science from American University. Eskinder moved to Ethiopia in 1991 right after the fall of Derg regime. Eskinder founded the first independent news paper called ኢትዮጲስ Eskinder was also chief editor of ሳተናው news paper until he was arrested in 2005 by TPLF regime.
Eskinder along with his friends were put behind bar with multiple charges including terrorism. On February 14,2018, Eskinder Nega was released from prison after the successful uprising of Ethiopians that led to change of government. Later, Eskidner founded Balderas for True Democracy Party (Balderas) in Addisababa Ethiopia and served as the President of the Party until recently.
However; due to Abiy Ahmed regime’s excessive assault and intimidation, Eskidner abandoned his leadership role and resigned from his leadership. On May 20,2023, Eskinder Nega announced the formation of Amhara Peoples’ Front (APF). የአማራ ህዝባዊ ግንባር mission is to stop the ongoing atrocities and genocide committed against Amhara people. Amhara is one of the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. As of 2023, the total population of Amhara people estimated 65 million. A UNDP monitored national census is highly recommended to verify this statistics.
The diaspora wing of APF is led by Major Dawit Weldegiorgis a prominent international lawyer, diplomat and community leader. Major Dawit studied at Haile Selassie University now AAU and graduated with an LLB, followed by a law degree from Columbia University.
Eskinder Nega was one of Ethiopia’s most prominent online writers, winner of the Golden Pen of Freedom in 2014; the International Press Institute’s World Press Freedom Hero for 2017; PEN’s International’s 2012 Freedom to Write Award.
