Nationwide power outage continuing in Ethiopia as of the evening of March 28. Transport and business disruptions likely.

A nationwide power outage is continuing to impact Ethiopia as of the evening of May 28. According to the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) the power failure began at 15:46 and is affecting all parts of the country except Bahir Dar City and the surrounding area; company officials have attributed the blackout to an unspecified system failure. Technicians are working to restore the power. While preliminary reports indicate that EEP has restored power in most parts of Addis Ababa, it remains unclear how long it will take to restore service fully.

Commercial and communications disruptions are possible until technicians fully restore electrical service. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times may occur due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as hospitals, ATMs, and petrol stations. Outages could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.
