Despite the investments of the Government of Ethiopia in close cooperation with its development partners, the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia is critical – but there is a window to act right now.

On 16 April, the UN will convene a high-level pledging event in Geneva for the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia together with the Governments of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the United Kingdom.

The purpose is to urgently raise international awareness and for Member States and other donors to express support and announce funding pledges to address the dire needs and bolster the resilience of vulnerable people.

Conflict and back-to-back climate shocks have pushed more than 21 million people in Ethiopia into humanitarian need this year. The lean season (July to September) when 10.8 million people are projected to be critically food insecure is looming large.

Yet the country’s UN-backed US$3.24 billion humanitarian response plan is less than 5 per cent funded. Keeping the response going over the next three months – and securing aid pipelines beyond that – will require $1 billion in funding.

The ministerial-level event will hear from representatives from the Governments of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the United Kingdom, as well as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and other UN and NGO representatives. Members States and other participants will take the floor for their announcements. The event will close with an announcement of the pledging result.
