Major festival promises football, athletics, live music and authentic cuisine from 15th-17th August
The Ethiopian Sports & Culture Federation in UK is preparing to host one of the year’s most anticipated community events, bringing together sport, music, and authentic Ethiopian culture for a three-day celebration at the New River Leisure Centre in Hornsey.
Running from 15th to 17th August, the festival promises something for every member of the Ethiopian diaspora and the wider London community, with organisers working tirelessly to create an authentic taste of home in North London.
A Celebration for All Ages
The festival’s inclusive approach ensures entertainment across all age groups. Young football enthusiasts will have the opportunity to showcase their skills on the pitch, whilst athletics competitions will test speed, strength and endurance. For the youngest attendees, a circus performance promises wonder and excitement, creating memories that will last long after the weekend concludes.
“We wanted to create an event that brings our entire community together,” explained one of the organisation’s directors, Alebachew Dessalegn, during a recent conversation. “From toddlers to grandparents, everyone will find something to enjoy.”
Culinary Journey and Musical Entertainment
Food lovers can look forward to authentic Ethiopian cuisine prepared by local business owners, offering traditional dishes at fair prices throughout the three-day event. The aroma of berbere spices and injera bread will transport visitors straight to the heart of Ethiopia.
Music will pulse through the venue across Saturday and Sunday, with multiple DJs curating soundtracks that blend contemporary hits with beloved Ethiopian classics. The musical programming reflects the community’s diverse tastes whilst maintaining strong cultural roots.
Honouring a Football Legend
Sunday’s finale carries special significance for Ethiopian football fans. The closing football matches will culminate in a trophy ceremony where winners will receive awards named in honour of Mulugeta Kebede, the beloved Ethiopian national football legend who recently passed away. This touching tribute ensures that Kebede’s legacy continues to inspire young athletes within the diaspora community.
The trophy ceremony promises to be an emotional highlight, celebrating both sporting achievement and the memory of one of Ethiopia’s greatest football ambassadors.
Star-Studded Musical Finale
The weekend’s crown jewel will be a live concert featuring Bisrat Surafel, the renowned Ethiopian musician who is travelling directly from Ethiopia to perform for London’s Ethiopian community. Surafel’s appearance represents a rare opportunity for diaspora members to experience authentic Ethiopian musical artistry without crossing continents.
His performance promises to be the perfect conclusion to three days of cultural celebration, bringing traditional melodies and contemporary Ethiopian sounds to the New River Leisure Centre stage.
Affordable Family Entertainment
The festival organisers have ensured accessibility for families, with children under 14 paying just £5 entrance fee throughout the weekend. Adults can enjoy Saturday’s festivities for £10, whilst Sunday’s ticket at £25 includes access to the highly anticipated musical concert featuring Bisrat Surafel.
These reasonable prices reflect the community-focused nature of the event, making it possible for entire families to participate in this cultural celebration.
